As part of graduation requirements, students in LAUSD Linked Learning pathways spend four years assembling a portfolio of their work. As a senior, before culmination, students select evidence from the portfolio and orally defend it by presenting it in front of a live panel. Students who successfully complete their defense will demonstrate they have met the standards of the LAUSD Graduate Profile, with states they will be Self-Advocates, Open-Minded, Adaptable and Effective Communicators.

the purpose of the link learning program is to ensure that our students are prepared for college career and a real and as part of that the portfolio defense is really nice Capstone to the whole experience the portfolio and the defense are authentic measures of how a student is method for domain of the district Rodger profile which are advocate for self and others. communicators adaptable and open-minded at Los Angeles High School of the Arts our students spend four years building their portfolios for asking them to think back to their experiences through their pathway and then to all reflect on an academic rigor piece the students have to defend this body of work specifically artifacts in a detailed presentation to a panel of Judges this is a really great example of equity greeting and that's been a focus of our district to have students work be evaluated on a rubric and four students have opportunities to revise their work until they reach proficiency it's not just about how someone doesn't matter it's like their lived experience and what they're walking away with that is the real value senior defense is in 3 weeks and I am nervous but I think it's all going to go in the end I'm really like editing and like revising all my things and getting my presentation ready so I know I'll be like good to go in front of an audience and we're going to start doing mock presentation in front of our peers and other people just to like get that feeling of being in front of the panel show another component of the senior defense program is the mentorship where we are students up with faculty mentors to work with the students to ensure that they're ready to pass their senior defenses by providing them feedback on their work and checking in with them multiple times throughout the process it just emphasizes to the student that we're all working lasa is together you can see it in the culture of the school I'm going to tell you I've been impressed by I think that you're all going and I cannot wait to hear what you're chances after this so in a few minutes I'm about to pick up my panel and I'm nervous but overall I think I'll do good all my work will help me had succeeded in that once our students have prepared their portfolio and they're ready for their senior defense will present to a panel of teachers guests alumni Partners your senior defense Victoria's Starts Now I really like the experience I had in last last year with my portfolio defense and I was excited to come back and repairs Channel because I wanted to give back to the community that gave me so much pain from the senior defense helps them to plan for their instruction that really gives teachers an opportunity to see where their students are and how they can make more impactful and action for them and really connected with the real world which is our goal of Link learning to reflect on my past four years it helps me like realize how like far I've come for this is me when I first came to La so I feel like I've been prepared to go into the real world After High School before my deposit didn't know that I have the ability to percent like for 45 minutes in front of people I was able to master a lot of skills like research critical thinking presentation skills and now I'm doing great in college thanks for everything I learned in the portal defense so this concludes your senior defense for student I feel like the senior defense is one of the most important things they can do in their High School career I'm feeling relieved that the defense is over but also happy that I actually passed it and that I passed it with flying colors I was so proud of myself for that it's movie and I think it's what has really added to everyone fine in to this process having more schools participate in the senior defense would really Elevate the work of our students and staff across the district and we hope that more schools will join us in this endeavor
